GOAL
Thegoal of the investigative and in-depth reporting grants is to ensure that high qualitystories about the extractive sectors of oil, gas, and mineralsare published and broadcastconsistently by the Tanzanianmedia,and that they generate constructive public debate and action by people in position to cause change.

A foreign company is constructing communication towers along the Dar es Salaam

The case in point is that of Fatu Said Selemani Mikoko (a widow) against Ziada Hemedi Mponda, both residents of Kiranjeranje village. A foreign company is constructing communication towers along the Dar es Salaam -Lindi road and in Kiranjeranje village they happened to lease a piece of land from ms Mikoko which she claimed to own.

WOMEN DEPRIVED RIGHT TO LAND

"Women have no right to own land in this village. It is a tradition but no one is working to change this bad tradition," explains Habiba Juma Nambondo, with deep emotion. And then she adds," Even in the family, boys are given a priority to own land while girls are not considered at all When a married woman loses her husband she knows that the best thing for her to do is to 'dust up her buttocks' and go back home to her parents because the in-laws will not give her an inch of land.

Conservation of the natural environment

MEET Ms Kisa Mwakifuna and the first thing she tells you is about conservation of the natural environment as a means of reducing poverty among poor communities. She also argues that for communities in the rural areas where farming is almost the only activity that keeps people going, the family must own land not only to guarantee its food security but also to ensure the safety and security of their lives.
